The Guild F-2512E – How does it fare in this review?

Today we take a look at the Guild F-2512E Maple, a guitar that combines two of Guild’s most iconic specialities; twelve strings and jumbo bodies. Guild has been designing jumbo guitars for well over 70 years now, so when I say you’re in good hands if you choose the F-2512E, I mean it. 

Being at the lower end of the price spectrum, no one will be surprised to discover Guild have opted for a tried-and-tested combination of solid Sitka Spruce and Mahogany here. Like many guitars before it, the F-2512E offers up a perfect combination of bright tones and jangly resonance that is only found on 12 string guitars.

 

Features & Build

The maple sides and arched back work flawlessly with the lighter spruce top to give this guitar a vintage look that, right now, is bang on trend. Whilst the F-2512E’s jumbo body might be a little too big for some individuals, it offers up a whole host of fan favored characteristics that include; powerful volume, long sustain, and a rich, full-bodied sound.

Moving away from the body we find a 25.5” scale length neck made from solid mahogany that utilizes the classic C shape. On top lies a premium 20-fret Pau Ferro fingerboard which not only works well with the natural aesthetic of the spruce, but also provides a smooth playing surface for speed and accuracy. Guild has also equipped the F-2512E Maple with a Pau Ferro bridge accompanied by a nut and saddle carved from bone, ditching the synthetic alternatives for something a little more natural.

Furthermore, the F-2512E plays host to a pearl rosette, period-correct tortoiseshell pickguard, and a satin polyurethane finish to top it all off. Finally, the headstock of the F-2512E plays host to twelve G Shield closed gear (Nikel) tuning machines that bring great tuning accuracy and precision to this guitar’s arsenal of features. Whilst twelve string guitars aren’t for everyone, it’s safe to say that F-2512E is one of the finest 12 string options out there. 

Moving onto the electronics, Guild have equipped the F-2512E with their very own Fishman-designed AP-1 electronics, helping to match the Fishman piezo pickup with the preamp perfectly. Alongside the preamp, players will have access to simple volume and tonal controls, allowing them to design the sound profile to their exact requirements. 

Speaking of sound, I have to be honest, this thing sounds absolutely fantastic. The spruce allows the bright characteristic of the twelve string setup to shine through, albeit with a tight response. Using the preamp doesn’t change a thing, with the trademark twelve string warmth still being prominent in its sound profile. 

Ultimately, what we have here is years of tried-and-tested methods coming together to create a nicely balanced guitar that is sure to please even the most stubborn of twelve string enthusiasts.
